YAD has been active in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for years, but this special thematic area became one of its major focus during the Ebola outbreak in the years 2014/2015 when all development partners in the country placed special premium on hygiene in the emergency Ebola response operations. Since then, YAD has been gathering knowledge and experience in this special field. Over the years, the organization has constructed water wells, community toilettes and conducted sensitization campaigns against bad hygiene practices in the rural areas. The organization focuses more on provision of the basic WASH facilities for the most vulnerable, while placing special emphasis on behavioral change campaigns amongst them through capacity building trainings.
In collaboration with its oversea partners prominent among which are Fambul Tik e.V. and BMZ of Germany, the organization is currently embarking on construction of community toilets and solar powered water stations in diverse communities across Kenema district. The project will also train Community Hygiene Monitors in each village to serve as a supervisors and custodians of the project facilities in order to ensure future sustainability. The project also includes effective sensitization against COVID-19 in the targeted region.
